John Dougherty papers, 1950-1952.

Correspondence and papers of John Alley Dougherty of St. Paul, who served with the 27th Infantry during the Korean War. Most of the papers consist of correspondence between Dougherty and Edna G. M. Kahlert, of St. Paul. Also included are letters from Dougherty's friends who were themselves in military service, and letters from various relatives. Lletters from January-June, 1951 were written while Dougherty was in training at Fort Riley, Kansas. After June 1951 through part of 1952, the letters were written in Korea. Information is found on life in training camps; the trip across the Pacific from the United States to Japan; civilian life in Japan and Korea; and some combat descriptions. Many of the letters are illustrated by Dougherty, depicting camp scenes, Korean natives, and similar subjects. Other material includes military passes, service records, army questionnaires, samples of Korean paper and money, a small notebook kepty by Dougherty contining sketches of scenes in Korea, a Korean guidebook published by the Department of Defense for armed forces personnel, and two small noteooks written in Chinese or Korean. Snapshot photographs document Dougherty's war time service, including photographs taken at Fort Riley, in Korea and in Japan, and at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin.
